The Animals that Saved Christmas
ai the hristmas oi
(Part III continued)
t was a terrible and loud sound. Something crashed just outside of the wall of Kai's water garden. The sound was so loud, it made waves of vibrations on the water of his pond. But all the Koi were fast asleep. Only Kai was awakened. His eyes flew open and he wondered what that noise was. "Maybe someone is in trouble," Kai said silently to himself. So, Kai turned and swam to the bottom of his pond, deeper than he had ever gone. There, he turned again and swam faster than he ever had. He broke through the surface of the water and leaped father than he ever had before. This time, this time, he jumped so high and leaped so far, Kai flew over the wall of his water garden and fell down to the ocean below!
s he fell into the water, Kai had noticed what had cause the loud noise. Santa's sleigh was sticking out of the shallow water near the shore line. Reindeer were strewn about. And there, face down on a flat rock, lay Santa Claus passed out. He and his sleigh and reindeer had all crashed.
Santa San (Mr. Santa or Santa Claus) his sleigh and all the reindeer had crashed
ai came up from the water and was right on the side of the rock where Santa San was lying. Kai filled his mouth with water and spat out a stream on Santa's check. Santa raised his head, opened his eyes and sat up. He saw Kai beside him in the water and knew what he had done. His eyes twinkled and he smiled at Kai. "Well, hello there little fellow," he said, "Thank you very much for helping me." Kai nodded and said, "You're welcome." Then Santa asked him, "Do you know who I am." "Oh, sure," replied Kai, "You are Santa San. My name is Kai and I am a Koi that lives up there on the other side of that wall with my family and friends in a water garden." Santa said, "I know who you are."
anta stood up and walked from the flat rock into the shallow water. He checked out all the reindeer to make sure they were all OK. All were fine as could be; no injuries at all. But Kai noticed concern on Santa's face. Santa reached into his two big side pockets and pulled out two special devices. "What are those," asked Kai? " Santa answered, "These are to locate missing bells that have fallen off the reindeer harness when we crashed and to find my missing box of special dust that make it possible for the reindeer to fly." Santa walked in the water and held up both his hands with the special devices that now were blinking red lights. If anything was found, the lights would be steady and a beep would sound.
Santa looking for the missing sleigh bells and his box of flying dust
very single sleigh bell is needed to help the reindeer navigate and get from place to place. The special box with the emergency supply of flying dust is necessary to fly them out of there. But the weather, still so poor, the night sky so dark and the clouds hiding every star, Santa could not find a single bell or his box of flying dust. It sure looked as if Christmas was not going to happen. Santa's normal jolly face was now very sad and there were tears falling down, his rosy cheeks.
ai saw Santa San's sad face and asked him a question. "Please sir, may I help," Kai pleaded. Santa put up a little smile, not his usual big grinning smile, but a polite little smile. "Thank you Kai for offering, but this is salt water and you are a freshwater fish. I'm a little concerned about you and about getting you safely back home!"
ai asked again, "Please Santa San, let me try, I can do it! I will be okay!" Santa saw how sincere and persistent Kai was and answered him, "Alright Kai, but be very careful and do not stay underwater too long," cautioned Santa. "I will be careful sir and I won't stay under too long," Kai told Santa.
ith those words, Kai dropped below the surface and disappeared into the dark water. He swam to the bottom of at first, just shallow water. But as he swam father out, the water became deeper and darker. Kai searched and searched and it was so dark, he could barely see anything at all. His eyesight was very, very good and he was used to swimming under water and in the dark. And his hearing was very good too. Kai used his own movements under the water to perhaps hear any bell that might move and perhaps ring as he moved though the water or maybe he could see some glint of some shine from them as he stirred up the water. Kai, as promised, did not stay under the water too long. He would come back up for air from time to time, take a deep breath and swim back down.
inally, one by one, Kai found the missing silver sleigh bells. He used all his strength and the power of his tail to bring them back up to the surface and Santa gladly took them from Kai's mouth.
Kai found all the missing sleigh bells and brought them to Santa
anta was very happy to have the bells back and he re-attached them to the rein deer. He had been busy while Kai was searching for the missing items. Santa pulled the reindeer all back together, lining them up behind his sleigh and then they pulled his sleigh out where it had crashed, front end first. Kai disappeared one last time to search again for Santa San's box of emergency flying dust. This was an emergency and he just had to find it! Just as Santa had shined a light into the water, Kai ran into his box and some of the flying dust spilled out. Kai closed the lid and with all his might, he pulled the box back to the surface and Santa took it happily from him!
